Alma Fria is a newer project started by Jan Holtermann whose family were long time wine
importers in Costa Rica. In 2012, he purchased a small vineyard just north of Annapolis,
planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and brought on Carroll Kemp (Red Car) as winemaker
and Greg Adams (Patz and Hall, Lynmar, Red Car, Freeman, Baker Lane) as viticulturalist.
In addition to the Holtermann vineyard, Pinot is sourced from Marimar Torres’ Dona Margarita
Vnyd. in Freestone and Chardonnay from Hawk’s Hill (Freestone) and Campbell Ranch (Annapolis).
A shared philosophy of a “vineyard first” approach to winemaking has been instrumental in realizing their vision. Generally 10-15% whole cluster and 20% new French oak, the Alma Fria wines have been celebrated at the West of West festivals and chosen as a course wine for the Grand Tasting dinner
